Be Serious

 late afternoon sunset at home
photography by sweetmango

The trick with life is this. be serious about certain things. like me, I am very serious about my role as a mother however I am not a serious mother. understand? in all other things, view the world through the eyes of a child. explore, have fun, stop and play games, with yourself or other people, learn, laugh, live, pray, sing, dance, create, lie on your back and stare at the clouds, marvel at the way they are formed and how beautifully graceful their movement through the blue blue sky. listen, really listen to the birds and how happy they are all day every day just doing what they were born to do, have you stopped whatever you were doing and watched an eagle ride the late afternoon thermals, slowly and leisurely and with such graceful power, did it ever occur to you that what he is doing is what he is born to do and the only reason he is doing it is because it provides him with a sense of joy and did it ever occur to you that watching him soar and be free so high on the blue gives you joy in the heart and  that it is exactly what you were born to do, to experience.  The cheetah sometimes for no reason runs as fast as he can just because he can and it makes him feel good, it gives his life a purposeful joy.  The lioness the powerful hunter spends time lying in the shade, rolling around in the sable coloured sand of the savannah, snoozing, playing with her cubs, she is being. just being. and in that experience she finds great joy and freedom and power.  Love, live, learn, watch, imitate, iniate, contemplate and radiate.  Lie down in the long grass and sleep quietly on a hot day, run down a hill with your arms spread wide on the days that the wind blows hard and cold.  Climb the steep sand dunes and once at the top stare at the ocean and watch it breath and dance and embrace the earth and then smile and run as fast as you can down the hill until you trip and fall and roll the rest of the way down and when you reach the bottom just laugh, really loudly and with wild abandon and intense joy.  See the world like a child, see everything as though it is the first and last time you ever laid eyes upon it. Be serious about being present. Be.

I just got back from taking my dog for a run along the beach when I read this.

I think I'll turn around and go back again.

Why waste such a beautiful day when I don't have to?

deep breath. i agree, wholeheartedly. i am sick & tired of being serious. so much of what we are serious about, REALLY, isn't worth our time & energy. (speaking for myself of course). thank you, lovie.

Excellent advice and I try to follow this although I must admit I tend to be too serious in life.

We are encouraged to take this approach that you have outlined here as actors because it frees up our instrument (body and voice) and thus leads to deeper performances. It also enriches ones life. I must always remind myself to do this more often. It's a great thing.

This is one of my favorite posts! Such a good reminder not to take ourselves too seriously. I've forgotten this the past couple of weeks and have suffered from SERIOUS stress. So silly... I needed to read this. THANK YOU:) XOXOXO
